Esher lies in Surrey on the southwestern edge of London, and from above it reads less as a dense town than as residential streets set among open land. Large commons and woodland cover much of the ground to the south, and the A3 bypass cuts across in a broad sweep. The High Street runs through the older centre, where the main roads meet.
Sandown Park racecourse fills a large site beside the town centre, and its oval track is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map.
