Espigão d'Oeste is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, in the south-western Amazon. Like many towns in the state, it grew during the settlement programmes of the late twentieth century, and it shows. From above, the centre is a regular grid of straight streets and square blocks, a plan clearly drawn before most of the buildings existed.
Farmland surrounds the town, much of it cleared from forest during and after that settlement period. Roads leave the urban grid in straight lines and continue as long rural tracks that divide the land into large rectangular properties. Rivers and streams wind between them, the only curves in an otherwise geometric landscape.
