Estrela is a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. From above, the town shows a fairly regular grid of streets on gently sloping ground beside a river. Farmland, small woods and rural roads extend into the rolling landscape around it.
Like much of this part of Rio Grande do Sul, the area was shaped by nineteenth-century European immigration, particularly from Germany. That heritage still shows in local family names, church towers and the tidy layout of the town. The river has long been central to its life, both as a transport route and, in heavy rains, as a source of floods.
