Etāwah stands on the Yamuna in western Uttar Pradesh, between Agra and Kanpur. The river runs past the southern side of the city, and its broad bed, sandbanks and floodplain form a wide pale margin on the map. The older town lies closest to the water, with narrow, winding lanes that contrast with the straighter roads of the newer districts further north.
Beyond the river the land breaks into the ravines typical of the Chambal and Yamuna valleys, a maze of eroded gullies with very few roads.
