Fairfield is the county seat of Solano County, California, halfway between the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. Its map is defined by what surrounds it. Low hills rise to the west and north, the wide wetlands of Suisun Marsh open to the south, and the straight runways of Travis Air Force Base sit on the eastern plain.
Interstate 80 cuts diagonally through the city, and most of Fairfield's growth has followed it. Near the old downtown the streets keep a tight grid. Further out, residential areas curve into loops and courts, with parks and shopping centres set between them. Suisun City joins Fairfield to the south, so the two can look like one town on the map.
