Farīdpur is the administrative centre of its district in Bangladesh's Dhaka Division, close to the Padma, one of the great rivers of the Bengal delta. The town takes its name from the Sufi saint Shah Farid. On a map, it is less a grid than a set of curving roads that follow the higher ground between water channels.
The Kumar River runs through the area, and the town's streets bend with it. Small ponds and tanks, common across Bengal, appear as clean shapes between the neighbourhoods. To the north, the land drops toward the braided channels and sandbars of the Padma, a landscape that shifts from season to season.
