Fasta Åland Map Poster & Print
Fasta Åland is the main island of the Åland archipelago, the autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland between Sweden and the Finnish mainland. Its coastline is extremely broken, full of long bays, narrow sounds and peninsulas left by the retreat of the ice. From above the land and water seem to interlock.
The capital, Mariehamn, sits on a narrow peninsula in the south, between two harbours, Västerhamn and Österhamn. Its orderly grid of broad, tree-lined streets stands out against the organic coastline around it. Country roads fan out from the town to villages and farms across the rest of the island.
To the east lie historic sites such as Kastelholm Castle and the ruins of the Bomarsund fortress, destroyed during the Crimean War. A Fasta Åland map poster captures an island that is at once compact and endlessly intricate, with thousands of smaller islands scattered around its edges.

Fjord-like bays
Long, narrow inlets cut deep into the island from all sides. On the poster they make the coastline look almost branched, with water reaching far into the interior.
Bomarsund and Kastelholm
In the east, the ruins of Bomarsund fortress and the medieval Kastelholm Castle mark the island's historic heart, set near the shores of sheltered bays.
