Fitchburg lies in north-central Massachusetts, where the North Nashua River runs through a valley between steep hills. The river powered the city's growth as an industrial centre, with paper mills and factories lining its banks through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. On the map the river and the railway follow the valley floor together, and the downtown sits tightly between them.
From the valley, streets climb the surrounding hillsides in winding lines, and the residential neighbourhoods fan out across the slopes.
