Fort Worth grew around the meeting point of the Clear Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River. On the map the two branches curve around the north and west sides of downtown before joining, and the river corridor forms a long green band of trails and parkland through the middle of the city. Downtown itself is a tight, regular grid on a rise just above the water.
North of the centre lie the Stockyards, a reminder of the city's history as a cattle town on the Chisholm Trail, which earned it the nickname where the West begins. West of downtown, the Cultural District gathers several major museums, including the Kimbell Art Museum, within a few blocks.
