Fortim is on the east coast of Ceará, where the Jaguaribe River, one of the state's most important rivers, reaches the Atlantic. The map is shaped by water. A broad estuary with channels and sandbanks runs along one side, the ocean shore curves along another, and the town's streets fill the ground between them in a small, compact grid.
The name comes from a small fort that once guarded the river mouth, a reminder of the colonial importance of this stretch of coast. Today the municipality is known for its beaches, including the headland of Pontal de Maceió, with coloured cliffs and dunes.
