Fraijanes lies in the department of Guatemala, on high ground south-east of the capital. From above, the town is shaped by the terrain. Roads follow ridges and valleys instead of a grid, small centres sit along the main routes, and residential developments fill the gaps between farms and patches of woodland. The pattern is scattered and uneven, and it reflects the hilly landscape.
The area has long been known for coffee. The Fraijanes plateau gives its name to one of Guatemala's recognised coffee-growing regions, thanks to its altitude, volcanic soils and cool climate. In recent decades, the town has also grown as a quieter residential alternative to Guatemala City, with gated communities and new neighbourhoods spreading along the road network.
