Frankfort is a village in Will County, Illinois, on the southwest edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. The map shows two distinct layers: a small historic downtown with a short grid of streets, and around it the curving drives, cul-de-sacs and ponds of residential subdivisions built in recent decades on what was once open prairie and farmland.
The historic district grew in the nineteenth century around the railroad, and the old rail corridor is now the Old Plank Road Trail, a long path for walking and cycling that crosses the village from east to west. On the poster it appears as a straight line cutting through the curves of the suburbs, a reminder of the route the town first grew along.
Hickory Creek winds through the area, adding a natural line of trees and open space among the neighbourhoods, and the village is known for its annual Fall Festival, which fills the downtown each Labor Day weekend.
