Fundación lies in the Magdalena department of northern Colombia, on the Fundación River near the southwestern foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. It is a crossroads town on the main road between the Caribbean coast and the interior, and on a map it shows as a compact grid pinned between the river and the highway.
The river runs along one side of town and then heads west across the plain toward the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, the great coastal lagoon. Around the town the land is flat and cultivated, much of it given over to plantations of oil palm and bananas, their rectangular fields adding a regular texture to the surrounding map.
