Gaalkacyo is the main town of the Mudug region in central Somalia, on the flat, dry plateau between the northern and southern parts of the country. From above there are no rivers or coastline to frame it. The town is defined by its road network: long routes arrive across the plain and gather into a denser set of streets and compounds at the centre.
It has long served as a crossroads for trade and travel between northern and southern Somalia. The town is also known for being administratively divided, with its northern and southern parts under different regional administrations. This division is part of its modern identity as a meeting point.
