Gannan sits in the far west of Heilongjiang, a county seat administered from Qiqihar and close to the boundary with Inner Mongolia. From above, the town is a tight cluster of blocks surrounded by a vast, level checkerboard of fields, the kind of landscape that makes the built area read almost like an island on the page.
The street pattern is largely orthogonal, with long avenues running roughly north to south and east to west and a scatter of newer residential compounds on the edges. Rural roads leave the town in straight lines, and drainage channels and shelter belts trace thin parallel strokes across the surrounding plain between villages.
