Gaogu is a town in the eastern part of Chongqing municipality, where the land rises into higher, more rugged country toward the provincial borders. Settlements here follow the valleys closely. From above, the town looks like a narrow ribbon of streets along a watercourse or road, pressed between slopes that leave little room for a grid.
The countryside around Gaogu is mountainous and mostly rural, with scattered villages, small fields and forested hillsides. Roads climb in switchbacks and connect the town to its neighbours through long, winding routes. At wider zoom levels the map becomes a network of thin, curving lines across broad empty spaces that suggest the height and steepness of the land.
