Gargždai lies in western Lithuania, a short distance east of Klaipėda, on the Minija River. The river flows through a valley lined with trees and slopes, and the town spreads along its banks, with the centre on higher ground and residential districts extending outward.
Gargždai is among the oldest recorded settlements in Lithuania, first mentioned in the thirteenth century. Today it is closely linked to Klaipėda, and many residents commute to the port city while enjoying the quieter surroundings of the river valley.
