Garoua Boulaï lies in Cameroon's East region, right on the border with the Central African Republic. It is a crossing point on the main road corridor linking the port of Douala with Bangui, and much of the town's life has long revolved around the trucks, trade and travellers that pass through.
From above, the road is the town's central fact. Streets branch from the main route and form a loose, spreading grid, and the border itself runs close by. Markets, depots and parking areas for freight traffic line the approach. The surrounding land is open savanna and woodland on the Adamawa plateau's southern edge.
