Gebre Guracha sits on the high plateau of the North Shewa zone in Oromia, north of Addis Ababa. From above, it is a linear town. Houses and compounds gather along the main road that crosses the upland, and a looser web of side streets branches off on either side before fading into cultivated fields.
The surrounding country is typical of the central Ethiopian highlands. Broad rolling ground is divided into small farm plots, with seasonal streams cutting shallow lines through it. The town serves as a local centre for trade and services, and its weekly rhythm follows the farms around it.
