General Mosconi lies in the far north of Salta province, along the national road that runs up toward the Bolivian border. The town forms a tidy block grid, typical of northern Argentine settlements, set against two contrasting landscapes. The flat, wooded Chaco plain extends to the east, and the first ridges of the sub-Andean ranges rise to the west.
The town is named after General Enrique Mosconi, the first director of the state oil company YPF, and the name fits.
