Solnechnogorsk lies northwest of Moscow, on the old road to Tver and Saint Petersburg. Its main geographic feature is Lake Senezh, a large lake that borders the town to the west and gives the map a broad, irregular sheet of water. From above, the streets sit between the lakeshore and the main highway, and the town's shape follows both.
The lake's shoreline is uneven, with small inlets and wooded banks, and forest surrounds much of the town.
