Goshen is the seat of Elkhart County in northern Indiana. Its plan is a classic Midwestern grid centred on a courthouse square downtown. The Elkhart River curves along the western side of town, and a nineteenth-century millrace runs parallel to it, now edged by a walking trail. Railway lines cross the grid at an angle, adding diagonals to an otherwise orderly map.
The town is known as the home of Goshen College, a Mennonite liberal arts college with a campus on the south side. The surrounding county is part of one of the largest Amish and Mennonite communities in the United States. Farmland stretches out in square sections on every side, and horse-drawn buggies are a familiar sight on country roads.
