Grajewo is a town in Podlaskie Voivodeship, north-eastern Poland, close to the historical boundary between Masuria and Podlasie. For a long time it was a border town. Before the First World War, the frontier between the Russian Empire and Prussia ran just to the west, and the town grew as a crossing point and trading post.
From above, Grajewo is compact. A market square and a small grid of streets form the centre, and housing estates and industrial areas spread out beyond it. The Ełk river runs through the area on its way south, and its line is one of the few natural features that break up the street pattern.
South of the town lie the wetlands of the Biebrza valley, protected as Poland's largest national park and known for its birdlife. A Grajewo map poster shows the town's tidy centre, the river and the flat country around it.
