Grefrath sits in the flat country of the Lower Rhine, in the Viersen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, a short distance from the Dutch border. From above, the land is a patchwork of fields cut by straight farm roads, with the built-up areas gathering into compact clusters rather than one continuous town.
