Gudauri stands high on the southern side of the Greater Caucasus, beside the Georgian Military Road that crosses the mountains towards Kazbegi and the Russian border. The Georgian Military Road is the organising line. It winds up through the area in long switchbacks, and Gudauri grew around it.
