Gupi lies in northern Jiangsu Province, in the Xuzhou area, on the wide alluvial plain that stretches across this part of eastern China. The land is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a compact block of streets surrounded by a precise patchwork of fields, drainage channels and rural roads.
The area has a long history. Gupi is associated with the site of ancient Xiapi, a city that appears in accounts of the late Han and Three Kingdoms periods, and waterways have shaped settlement here for centuries. Today the town serves as a local centre for the surrounding farming villages.
