Haderslev lies in southern Jutland, at the inner end of Haderslev Fjord, which runs east to the Little Belt. From above, the old town forms a compact core between the narrow fjord and Haderslev Dam, a lake formed by damming the stream west of the centre. Newer districts extend north and south beyond them, and farmland surrounds the town.
The town is dominated by its cathedral, a tall brick church that has served as the cathedral of the diocese since the 1920s. Haderslev was under German rule from 1864 to 1920, when North Schleswig voted to join Denmark. Traces of that period remain in some buildings, and the old centre keeps well-preserved streets and half-timbered houses.
