Ḩadīthah lies on the Euphrates in Iraq's Anbar Governorate, north-west of Ramadi. The river dominates the map: a broad, curving channel with low islands and narrow bands of cultivated land on both banks, where palm groves and fields follow the water. The town spreads along the river, with residential streets on higher ground and the open desert plateau beyond.
Upstream lies the Haditha Dam, one of the largest in Iraq. It holds back the Euphrates to form the large reservoir known as Lake Qadisiyah. The dam is a key source of hydroelectric power and water control for the country, and on regional maps the reservoir appears as a long, branching body of water in otherwise arid country.
