Hailun is a county-level city in Suihua, in central Heilongjiang, set on the rolling plain south-west of the Lesser Khingan foothills. On a map the town is a compact block of streets laid out mostly in straight lines, surrounded on every side by a vast, orderly patchwork of agricultural fields and shelterbelts.
The region's fertile black soil makes it one of the most productive farming areas in northeast China, known in particular for soybeans.
