Hanover is on Massachusetts' South Shore, about twenty-five miles southeast of Boston. The map shows a typical New England town layout: no central grid, but old roads radiating across a wooded landscape, with houses set along them and cul-de-sac neighbourhoods filling in the spaces. The North River forms part of the town's southern boundary, winding through salt marsh on its way to the sea. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the river's banks had shipyards, and vessels built here were floated downstream to the coast.
