Hānsi lies in Hisar district in Haryana, on the flat plains northwest of Delhi, along the main road between Rohtak and Hisar. It is one of the older towns of the region, and its map shows a clear difference between a tight historic core of narrow, winding lanes and the straighter, more open roads and colonies that have grown around it.
At the heart of town is the old fort, a large raised mound that was occupied and rebuilt over many centuries. In the late eighteenth century, the Irish adventurer George Thomas made Hānsi the base of the short-lived state he carved out in the region. Old gateways, including the Barsi Gate, still mark where the historic lanes meet the roads leading out of town.
Irrigation canals cross the surrounding farmland in long straight lines, and a railway passes the town. The result is a compact portrait of a town with deep roots in the Haryana plains.
