Hawthorne lies in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, a few miles inland from the Pacific. From above, it is a dense and almost perfectly regular grid, typical of the Los Angeles basin. Hawthorne Boulevard runs north to south through the centre, and the 405 and 105 freeways cross the edges of the city.
The Hawthorne Municipal Airport, also known as Jack Northrop Field, takes up a long rectangle on the city's east side. Around it are large industrial buildings, including the headquarters and rocket factory of SpaceX.
