Heidelberg sits at the point where the Neckar emerges from a narrow valley between forested hills into the flat Upper Rhine plain. The old town is a long narrow strip on the south bank, squeezed between the river and the slope of the Königsberg. Hauptstraße, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Germany, runs straight through it.
Above the old town are the red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle. On the opposite bank, the Philosophenweg climbs across the hillside with views over the roofs. The Old Bridge links the two sides. The city is also home to Heidelberg University, founded in 1386 and the oldest in Germany, whose buildings are spread across the old town and newer campuses.
A Heidelberg map poster shows a strong contrast. East of the centre, streets are confined to narrow valley ribbons along the river. To the west, the city opens into a broad grid across the plain. The Neckar, with its bridges and islands, runs through the middle and holds the composition together.
