Heiligenhaus sits in the Mettmann district of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Essen, Velbert and Ratingen. It lies in the hilly Niederbergisches Land, the northern part of the Bergisches Land. On a map, the town stretches along a main axis. Residential streets branch off to either side and then stop at wooded slopes and stream valleys.
The name translates roughly as holy house. Although the Ruhr cities and Düsseldorf are close by, the town feels separate on the map: green gaps and small valleys divide it from its neighbours.
