Heinola lies in Päijät-Häme in southern Finland, where the water of the lake district narrows into the Jyrängönvirta rapids on its way south to the Kymi river. From above, the town is organised around this channel. Streets gather on both banks, bridges cross it, and lakes and bays open out to the north and south.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century and later served as a provincial capital, and its old centre still keeps a regular grid of streets close to the water. Heinola is also known for its bird sanctuary and for the long gravel ridges that cross the landscape, carrying roads and forest.
