Hemet occupies part of the San Jacinto Valley in Riverside County, Southern California, and its map is shaped by that setting. The city's streets are laid out in a broad, regular grid across the flat valley floor, with long straight avenues running for miles, while the edges of the map rise into foothills where roads begin to curve and thin out.
The city grew as an agricultural centre, and traces of that past remain in the size of some blocks and in the long roads that once separated orchards and fields. Hemet is also known for the Ramona Pageant, an outdoor play performed in the Ramona Bowl amphitheatre in the hills since the 1920s, one of the longest-running outdoor dramas in the United States.
