Hénin-Beaumont is in the Pas-de-Calais department, in the heart of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal basin. The present town was formed in 1971 from the merger of Hénin-Liétard and Beaumont-en-Artois. From above, its street network is dense and irregular, with no single centre. Older town cores sit beside rows of former miners' housing, and large commercial zones sit at the edges.
Coal mining shaped every part of this landscape. Mine sites, rail lines and spoil heaps still leave their mark on the map. The wider mining basin is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cités, pits and slag heaps. Major motorways pass close by and cut broad lines through the surrounding area.
