Herdecke lies on the Ruhr at the southern edge of the Ruhr area, where the river widens into two reservoirs, Hengsteysee and Harkortsee. On a map, those two lakes are the town's clearest shapes. They sit on either side of the centre like two open hands, and roads and houses climb the wooded hills of the valley sides around them.
The Herdecke railway viaduct, a long row of stone arches over the Ruhr, is the town's best-known structure and shows as a thin line across the water. Beside Hengsteysee stands the Koepchenwerk, a historic pumped-storage power station whose pipes run straight down the slope. Herdecke is also known for its community hospital, which is closely tied to the origins of the nearby University of Witten/Herdecke.
