From above, Hồng Lĩnh is pressed against the base of the Hồng Lĩnh range, a ridge of forested peaks that rises sharply along its western side. The streets thin out as they climb toward the slopes, so the built-up area spreads mostly across the flatter ground below, where the grid is loose and practical rather than planned.
The main north–south highway of Vietnam runs through the town, and on a map it reads as a firm spine that most local streets branch off.
