Horizon City sits in El Paso County, Texas, on the open desert east of El Paso and a short distance from the border with Mexico. It began as a planned land development in the second half of the twentieth century and has grown quickly since, as new subdivisions spread outward across the flat ground.
That history is easy to read from above. Rather than a traditional grid, the map is made of curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and looping crescents, stitched together by a few long, straight arterial roads. Between the finished neighbourhoods, wide empty tracts of desert still show as blank space, marking where the next phase might go.
