Horki lies in the east of Belarus, in the Mogilev region, among gentle farmland and scattered woods. The town is laid out with a modest mix of straight streets and older curving roads, but its most distinctive feature on a map is the large campus of the agricultural academy, with its grounds, gardens and ponds at the centre of town.
The Belarusian State Agricultural Academy traces its origins to an agricultural school founded here in 1840, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the former Russian Empire. The academy has shaped the town ever since, with teaching buildings, experimental plots and green spaces woven into the urban fabric.
