Huaidian is the seat of Shenqiu County in Zhoukou, in the east of Henan Province. It lies on the North China Plain, one of the flattest and most densely farmed landscapes in the world, and the map reflects that. Nothing interrupts the roads here, and they run long and straight, dividing the town into large, regular blocks.
Water provides the curves. The rivers and irrigation channels of the Huai basin wind through and around the town, and the built-up area forms along them. Past the centre, the fields begin almost at once, laid out in narrow strips and parcels with villages scattered across them.
