Hwawŏn is a town in Dalseong County on the south-western edge of Daegu. From above, its setting is defined by the Nakdong River, one of Korea's great waterways, which passes to the west, with flat floodplain land along its banks and wooded hills rising behind the town. Apartment blocks, local streets and main roads fill the lower ground between river and slope.
Its position at the edge of a large city gives Hwawŏn a mixed character. Dense housing and commercial streets connect it to central Daegu, while the riverbanks and nearby hills keep open space close at hand.
