Ibicoara is a small town in the southern part of the Chapada Diamantina, the mountainous plateau region in the heart of Bahia. On a map the town itself is modest, a compact grid of streets on high ground. Around it, the terrain opens into a landscape of ridges, valleys and river gorges, with roads winding between them instead of running straight.
The municipality is best known for the Cachoeira do Buracão, a waterfall that drops into a deep, narrow canyon and draws hikers from across Brazil. The high altitude also gives Ibicoara a cooler climate than much of Bahia, and farming on the plateau around the town includes irrigated crops and coffee. Unpaved tracks lead out towards the natural sites and rural communities.
