Ibiúna lies in the green hills west of São Paulo, and most of its territory is rural. The town itself is a modest, compact grid on higher ground. Beyond it, the map opens into a network of winding country roads that follow ridges and valleys between small farms and stretches of Atlantic forest. To the north the Itupararanga reservoir reaches in with long, finger-like arms.
The municipality is a major supplier of vegetables to the São Paulo metropolitan area, and its farm plots show up as a fine patchwork. It is also remembered for October 1968, when police broke up a clandestine congress of the national student union, UNE, held on a farm here and arrested hundreds of students.
