Idlib lies in north-western Syria, on a gently rolling plain between Aleppo and the Mediterranean coastal mountains. On a map the city has a compact, roughly circular shape: a dense old centre of narrow streets and courtyards, newer districts with broader avenues around it, and beyond them a wide expanse of agricultural land crossed by country roads.
The surrounding region has long been known for olive cultivation, and groves stretch across much of the countryside. The province also contains some of Syria's most important archaeological sites, including Ebla, an ancient city-state excavated at Tell Mardikh to the south-east, and many of the late antique settlements known as the Dead Cities.
