Igreja Nova is a town in the south of Alagoas, in the lowland country towards the lower course of the São Francisco River. From above, the urban area is compact: a network of streets around the centre, with the edges quickly giving way to open fields. The surrounding land is fairly level, crossed by streams, channels and rural roads.
The street pattern is simple, with a few main roads carrying traffic in and out and smaller streets filling the blocks between them. Beyond the town, large cultivated areas and wetter ground create broad, open shapes on the map. The contrast between the dense centre and the wide countryside is what gives the print its character.
The town's name means new church, and like many towns in the Brazilian northeast, it grew up around its parish church and square.
