Illzach borders Mulhouse to the north, in the southern part of Alsace. The town is part of Mulhouse's continuous urban area, but its map has its own character. There is an older village core, residential streets fanning out across the flat Rhine plain, and larger industrial and commercial areas toward the edges.
As the name suggests, the Ill River passes through the commune, bordered by strips of green. It gives the otherwise flat, gridded layout a natural curve. Illzach also includes the Modenheim quarter, a separate cluster of streets within the same commune.
