Imerimandroso lies on the north-eastern side of Lake Alaotra, in Madagascar's Alaotra-Mangoro region. The lake is the largest in the country and sits in a broad, flat basin ringed by hills. On a map, the town is a modest cluster of streets between the higher ground and the wetlands that stretch toward the water.
The Alaotra basin is one of Madagascar's most important rice-growing areas, and paddies cover much of the land around the lake. The reed beds and marshes along the shore are also the only home of the Alaotra gentle lemur. Imerimandroso's layout reflects this farming life, with roads and tracks connecting the town to fields and neighbouring villages.
