Ingolstadt sits on the Danube in Upper Bavaria. From above, the old town forms a compact oval on the river's north bank, enclosed by a belt of parks and paths that follows the line of its old fortifications. Beyond that ring, residential districts and large industrial areas spread out across the flat land, with the river cutting a broad curve along the southern side.
The city was a Bavarian fortress for centuries, and parts of its defensive works still survive. It is also where the Bavarian beer purity law was proclaimed in 1516. In literature, Mary Shelley sent Victor Frankenstein to study at the university here. Today Ingolstadt is known above all as the headquarters of Audi, whose large site shapes the north of the city.
